The African Famine

The worst droughts in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and across East Africa in 60 years have left more than 12 million people in need of food, water and basic facilities. Half of those are children.
The situation has now been officially declared a ‘food crisis’. That means children and the elderly are severely malnourished. In parts of Somalia.
The drought is not expected to ease until early 2012 and the numbers of vulnerable people affected are anticipated to rise dramatically. Over the coming three to four months, the region’s fragile food security will continue to deteriorate; the most vulnerable communities are preparing for below-average summer harvests, early depletion of pasture and water, and continued high prices of food, water and fuel. You can assist by donating online or use the caritas Envelopes in the foyer.

Pope arrives for WYD

...I have come here to meet thousands of young people from all over the world, Catholics committed to Christ searching for the truth that will give real meaning to their existence. I come as the Successor of Peter, to confirm them all in the faith, with days of intense pastoral activity, proclaiming that Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life; to motivate the commitment to build up the Kingdom of God in the world among us; to exhort young people to know Christ personally as a friend and so, rooted in his person, to become faithful followers and valiant witnesses.
Why has this multitude of young people come to Madrid? While they themselves should give the reply, it may be supposed that they wish to hear the word of God, as the motto for this World Youth Day proposed to them, in such a way that, rooted and built upon Christ, they may manifest the strength of their faith.
Many of them have heard the voice of God, perhaps only as a little whisper, which has led them to search for him more diligently and to share with others the experience of the force which he has in their lives. The discovery of the living God inspires young people and opens their eyes to the challenges of the world in which they live, with its possibilities and limitations. They see the prevailing superficiality, consumerism and hedonism, the widespread banalization of sexuality, the lack of solidarity, the corruption. They know that, without God, it would be hard to confront these challenges and to be truly happy, and thus pouring out their enthusiasm in the attainment of an authentic life. But, with God beside them, they will possess light to walk by and reasons to hope, unrestrained before their highest ideals, which will motivate their generous commitment to build a society where human dignity and true brotherhood are respected. Here on this Day, they have a special opportunity to gather together their aspirations, to share the richness of their cultures and experiences, motivate each other along a journey of faith and life, in which some think they are alone or ignored in their daily existence. But they are not alone. Many people of the same age have the same aspirations and, entrusting themselves completely to Christ, know that they really have a future before them and are not afraid of the decisive commitments which fulfill their entire lives. That is why it gives me great joy to listen to them, pray with them and celebrate the Eucharist with them. World Youth Day brings us a message of hope like a pure and youthful breeze, with rejuvenating scents which fill us with confidence before the future of the Church and the world.

Australian Nun in the Midst of the African Famine

A first testimonial from Australian Franciscan, Sr Maureen Elliott, of the terrible humanitarian crisis that is gripping East Africa has been received. Sr Maureen, who works at the Dhaddiim Health Centre in Ethiopia in an area which the UN declared 'famine and emergency', reports that all the women and children presenting to the clinic are starving.
Sr Maureen is appealing for immediate funds to keep feeding mothers, babies and children in the Dhaddiim Health Centre. All donations sent to Catholic Mission will be transferred directly to the bank account Sr Maureen has nominated - the first transfer was made last week. Visit the website www.catholicmission.org.au where you can make donations if you wish. Or you can use the envelopes provided in the foyer.

The Atheists Foundation has launched a campaign urging people with no religious affiliation to tick the “no religion” box on the census form on 9 August. We are expressing solidarity with all those who believe in God, and saying faith and people of faith count! Read the full letter at: www.parra.catholic.org.au.

Let your light shine

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate,
but that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, talented and fabulous?'
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn't serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are born to make manifest the Glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.
(From the inaugural speech of Nelson Mandela).

Response of Love

Father, I abandon myself into Your hands. Do with me as you will. Whatever you do, I thank You now. I am ready for all, everything I accept, if only Your will be done in me and in all your creatures. I desire nothing else, my god. Into your hands I commend my spirit; I give you my soul with all the love of my heart, for I love You, my God, and so need to give, to surrender myself into Your hands without measure, and with confidence beyond all questioning, because You are my father.

Charles de Foucauld (1858 – 1916)

(Peoplespeak is produced with ecclesiastical approval by Carmelprint)

Lasting Wealth

Here is a story from way back when I was young!

Often, after school I would go on an errand to our local shopping centre for small items Mum needed. It was an easy walking distance, and on the way there I regularly passed a woman who was coming from that direction. She was in early middle age and wore, to my way of thinking, very drab clothing and had a blank expression. To me she seemed a colourless personality.
One day, seeing her coming, I decided to give her a huge smile – for sheer devilry, and to see what the effect would be. We got close and I made eye contact and gave her the huge smile. The results were truly amazing! She smiled back, a wonderful transfiguring smile, and in smiling she was really beautiful.

After that, whenever we met we smiled a genuine welcome and exchanged brief greetings. My cheeky experiment has had lasting effects for me: to realize the power and creativity a smile can have, and the beauty it can reveal - a little revelation of the beauty of God in the face of the other person. (Francis)

Relying Totally on God.

“The longer I live the more convinced I am that the man who has just enough for the day is happiest. What little I have at my disposal I give, and to all with equal affection. At my death I shall have nothing left, and this poverty will by my greatest honour. Providence helps me, drop by drop, but the drop always comes in time. We are like little birds in the nest. We need Providence as much as they need their mother. The help always arrives at the right moment. Nothing superfluous, to be sure, but what is strictly necessary never fails us.” (Blessed John XX111 1881 – 1963)

A disciple full of joy…

From a letter from Mary MacKillop written on Ascension Day 1873:

I can never pray for a particular intention- but in God’s loved will… Whilst I desire with all my heart to pray for particular intentions I cannot help at the same time desiring that He only use my prayers for the intention that His own will most desires at this time. Thus I feel joy when things go well, for I see his will in this, and equal joy when things go wrong or against our natural desire, for there again I see His will and am satisfied that He has accepted my prayers for some object at this time nearer to his will.

The Power of Encouragement

I want to tell you about a couple of Sr Wendy’s regular weekly visitors at our mission at Mapuordit, Sudan. There is a blind man, and a little girl who leads him around on a stick. For years they have haunted our gates. Now they come once a week with a bundle of firewood. Sister pays them money, and also gives them some food. The change in the little girl is amazing. From being a frightened, timid, reticent child, she is now all smiles and looks a million dollars when she is “paid” for what she has earned” (OLSH Newsletter, October 2002)

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

St John Chrysostom suggests that young husbands should say to their wives: I have taken you in my arms, and I love you, and I prefer you to my life itself. For the present life is nothing, and my most ardent dream is to spend it with you in such a way that we may be assured of not being separated in the life reserved for us.... I place your love above all things, and nothing would be more bitter or painful to me than to be of a different mind to you.

Keep your fork

A young woman was diagnosed with a terminal illness and had only a short time to live. As she was getting her things ‘in order’, she contacted her pastor and told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in.As the pastor was preparing to leave, the young woman suddenly said: ‘There’s one more thing: I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand.’The pastor stood looking at the young woman, not knowing quite what to say.The young woman explained. ‘My grandmother once told me this story: "In all my years of attending church socials and potluck dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, ‘Keep your fork.’ It was my favourite part because I knew that something better was coming...like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful, and with substance!"‘So, I just want people to see me in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder "What’s with the fork?" Then I want you to tell them: "Keep your fork...the best is yet to come."’At the funeral people walked by the young woman’s casket and they saw the fork placed in her right hand. Over and over, the pastor heard the question ‘What’s with the fork?’ And over and over he smiled. Then in his sermon he explained to everyone what the fork symbolised for this woman and the strength of her belief in the promise of eternal life.So the next time you reach down for your fork, let it remind you ever so gently, that the best is yet to come.
